Tri-County Restaurant is an historical Old Route 66 landmark located in Villa Ridge, MO and which is
still fully operating (Closed as of September 2006).  The property was originally owned by a Spencer
Groff, who along with his father owned a large chunk of land very near the present day Tri-County
Restaurant & Truck Stop  (TCTS).  The property saw many structures as the restaurant started as a
garage where they soon started selling soft drinks and tobacco.  At this early time it was known as the
Altamont Garage Park.  Due to the bright yellow paint the location was given the name of the Banana
stand which stuck for many years.  Later the Groff's erected The Diamonds Restaurant in 1927 which
claimed to be the "world's largest roadside restaurant". It was built in the shape of a baseball diamond
due to the odd shape of the lot.

It was not till the time of the fire on Feb 27,1948 (Although the Franklin county tribune said it was on
March 4, 1947), that the restaurant passed ownership to the Eckelkamp Family which rebuilt what was
the 2nd Diamonds Restaurant which served the public under that name until 1967 when a newer
(third) building was erected east and closer to the newer Interstate 44.  The Diamonds sign and name
were taken to this new site and a new owner bought this older building and opened what is now the
Tri-County Restaurant & Truck Stop.

Menu on the left side of this page.

Rumors which concern this historical site include the stories of a small girl being hit and killed by a
speeding car one day long ago when she got off of her school bus and crossed the road in front of
this restaurant and another of a truck driver being struck and killed at some point near the same
location.

Other stories tell of possible suicides, drug overdoses or heart attacks of truckers who once stayed
in the then existing lodging cabins on the site or the later sleeping rooms located on its second floor.

Haunting stories from both current and past employees, owners and guest include sightings of an
apparition in the dinning room area and main floor of a man who wears khaki or tan pants with a
checkered or plaid designed shirt, the witnessing of a shadow apparition coming up the basement
stairs and into the kitchen area, children witnessing a man or monster on the stairs going to the
second floor with a knife and cutting or killing a woman.  It has been said that one time after a child
saw this that blood was found on the wall the very next morning.  Other stories are told of an unseen
spirit that employees have nicknamed "George" who will take a fancy to females and caress are lightly
touch them by stroking their arms, patting them on the back, etc.  Some customers and employees
have witness things moving on their own such as the salt and pepper shakers or ketchup bottles on
the tables, furniture during clean up, things being knocked to the ground and breaking when no one
is near them and various appliances being turned off or on their own.  Many current and past
employees are afraid to go into the basement or up on the second floor.

For this investigation several video recorders with and without infra red extenders and night shot
capabilities were used.  Wireless pc-camera systems were used along with CCTV systems with Lap
Top PC's, DVD and VCR recorders.  Various digital still cameras, EMF meters and IR Thermometers
were utilized throughout the investigation.

The investigative group gathered at the Tri-County Restaurant between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. where
some of us indulged in their menu and wee able to sample some of the home style cooking that has
been famous for decades at this location.

We then met with the owner and some employees conducting interviews and discussed the
investigative procedures for the night.  We were all then given a full tour of this very large site by the
hospital owner.

Equipment was focused on the second floor for this location where we were able to conduct a 2 hour
lock down of that floor while investigating other areas of the site.

THe investigative group departed the facitly at about 4 a.m.

1. Some investigators observed a coffee pot full of coffee sliding across the counter and crashing to
the floor while we were eating our diner at about 9:15 p.m.  Owners brother cut foot with glass after
walking by.

2. The loud banging noise like a door being slammed shut three times was witness by investigators
coming from a door which was closed and locked at about 9:45 p.m.

3. Some investigators were touched by an unseen force in various manners.

4. A door on the second floor was being opened on its own while an investigator was trying to hold it
closed during infra red emitter set u pat about 12:20 a.m.

5. Audible voices and whispers from unseen sources were experienced by many investigators
throughout the investigation.

6. Banging and rattling from the Kitchen area was witnessed by some investigators and a previous
owner at about 1:15 a.m., interaction in the area cause it to repeat and be recorded along with an EMF
spike of 3 to 4 milligauss afterwards.

7. A mist like figure was both witnessed and photographed by an investigator at about 10:20 p.m. in
downstairs bathroom.

8. EMF spikes and abnormalities were experienced in various locations with no explainable cause.

9. A full human apparition was witnessed in the first floor bathroom by the brother of the owner at
about 11;15 p.m. in same bathroom where mist like anomaly was photographed.  Post event interview
described a dragging or growling noise in hallway after he walked into the bathroom and started
using urinal.  Then a translucent male wearing a red flannel type shirt and khaki pants walked in then
dissipated in front of the persons eyes.  This was such a distraction that he realized he was then
urinating on the floor vs. in the urinal.

10. Some investigative equipment was shut off and one piece even was turned back on with no
explanation during and right after lock down between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m..

11.  A piece of paper turning over on its own was observed by some investigators on the second floor
at about 3:00 .a.m.

12. Two pennies (1957 & 1969) were tossed on the floor while some investigators were trying to
conduct an EVP session on the second floor with no explainable cause at about 3:00 a.m..

13. Various cold and hot spots were observed.

14. Smells on second floor like a rotting or decaying animal or flesh that would come on strong with
activity and dissipate.

15. The feeling of being watched while in the building throughout the investigation was described by
many seasoned investigators.

1. Very high and dangerous EMF levels were found on the second floor area with up to a 10 milligauss
ambient in some areas.  The average range was from 5 to 10 milligauss.  These are dangerous levels
for humans to be in for long periods of times.  Levels possibly caused by faulty electrical wiring with
broken shields, etc.  Also such levels are theorized to feed paranormal energies.  Reducing such
could reduce the level of activity on this level.

2. Renovation is being conducted on the second floor possibly causing an increase in activity there
as well.

3. Basement has a lot of standing water which could increase humidity levels and possibly increase
activity in that area.

4. From interviews and observation, some activity may increase on the first floor when the noise level
peaks.

Several digital and film still pictures were taken by various investigators along with several hours
worth of video and audio.   Full analysis of all gathered stills, video and audio will take some time to
complete.

Preliminary Analysis

Several notable EVP's have already been identified along with some unexplainable photographs and
video captures.

Final Analysis & Results

Two notable anomalous digital photographs and two video segments were captured at this
investigation.  Nineteen notable audio segments were also captured with most of them being EVP.

It is the opinion of
Paranormal Task Force that enough unexplainable evidence was
captured and/or experienced to substantiate the high probability of an actual haunting or
paranormal activity.  Further analysis of captured evidence will possibly aide to substantiate this as an
actual haunting.  Follow up investigation(s) will have to be conducted to further document specific
activity and to attempt the possible collection of additional evidence.  An attempted recreation of
the unexplainable photographs will be needed for documentation.

HELP NEEDED CONCERNING THE TRI-COUNTY RESTAURANT - TRUCK STOP (FORMERLY THE DIAMONDS
RESTAURANT) LOCATED IN VILLA RIDGE, MO

The research section of MPR is in need of help. We are looking for information on a Mr. William Bates.   Mr. Bates is believed to
be the name of a person who lived in the basement of the Tri-County Truck Stop (formerly the Diamonds Restaurant) on
Historic Route 66 in Villa Ridge, MO.

Eyewitnesses tell us that he may have lived there from about the late 1950’s through the mid 1970’s.  He is described as a
short man who had the appearance of a vagrant, further described as a person who may have had some mental impairment.
The last witness testimonial on Mr. Bates was that after an altercation he left the restaurant and ran in to the woods behind it.
After a search, which was not successful, he was never seen at the truck stop again.

Although MPR has found lots of witness testimony there has not been any hard evidence that Mr. Bates did really exist. If you
knew Mr. Bates or know some one who does.  Please contact Tim at the following address:
