New Scheduled Date - June 6, 2009 - 8:00 P.M. to Sunrise 332 South Mansion Street / Sullivan, Missouri Join author Troy Taylor for a Haunting Overnight at the Historic Harney Mansion in Sullivan, Missouri. We'll spend the entire night searching for the reported ghosts, learn about its rich history and trace the footsteps of famous owner, Union Civil War General William Harney. Is this 1856 home really haunted? You may just find out for yourself on October 3, when we give a limited number of ghost hunters the chance to experience the mansion for themselves. This event is not for the faint of heart and children are not allowed. Flashlights are required! More About the Harney Mansion: Union General William Harney was one of the best-known military figures in America at the time of the Civil War. He had already served in Florida during the Seminole War, then fought the Sioux Indians out west in 1855 & 1856, but his role in Missouri during the volatile time before the Civil War almost changed the course of history. Missouri took a neutral stance at the start of the war, which caused fighting between the secessionists and those loyal the Union. General Harney was in charge of the Federal Arsenal at St. Louis, but radical Union men wanted Captain Nathaniel Lyon, an ardent abolitionist to take over the role. Lyon was given the authority to arm Union-supporting St. Louis citizens to protect the city, but Harney refused to allow this, but Harney was called away to Washington, leaving Lyon in charge. Immediately, Lyon marched on Camp Jackson, the base for the secessionist militias, and took hundreds of men prisoner. As he marched them through the streets, rioting broke out and then situation escalated, leaving 28 people, including women and children, dead. Rioting swept through the city and hundreds fled. Soon after, General Harney returned from Washington and succeeded in restoring order to the city. The incident, however, had widespread consequences. At the sight of federal forces attacking state militia men, thousands rallied around the Southern cause, joining the Confederate Army. General Harney tried to broker peace in the state, vowing that Federal troops would recognize Missouri's neutrality, but it was too late. The state, along with the rest of the country, was plunged into war. General Harney purchased the mansion in Sullivan in 1872, several years after the war, as a summer home. The house had been built in 1856 by local physician Dr. Alanson W. Leffingwell. Harney added to the house, duplicating the original structure’s design and material, and used the mansion as a summer retreat from St. Louis until 1884, when he moved to Florida, where he died in 1889. The house remained in the Harney family until 1896, after which it changed hands several times. In April 1984, it was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. But by the early 1990s, the structure was in disrepair. In 1998, the Friends of the General Harney House formed to try and save the structure and have been working to restore it ever since. Over the years, there have been many eyewitness reports of anomalous moving light in the mansion, as well as full-figured, glowing apparitions that have been seen in the windows. Footsteps have been reported, as well as smells of pipe tobacco and a lilac perfume. Others claim to have been touched by unseen hands in the house, as well. Some researchers have called this "one of the most haunted spots in Missouri". (Thanks to Greg Myers for Additional info on this site) Don't miss out on your chance to be one of the lucky few to experience a night in this house! A Night at the Harney Mansion Includes: * Overnight Access to the House * Private Ghost Hunt with Troy Taylor * History & Hauntings of the Building * Bring Your Own Snacks & Drinks * Bring Your Own Ghost Hunting Equipment * Flashlights Required More on the history and haunting can be found online at: WWW.HARNEYMANSION.COM |
