Satan's Tunnel (Warren County, MO) - Visit & Mini-Investigation of May 13, 2006 - 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In attendance were Tom and Greg of MPR. Local weather conditions for this visit & mini-investigation for the time period of 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. was cloudy, winds from the west at 14 to 20 mph, temperatures started at 58 degrees Fahrenheit dropping to 56 Fahrenheit, dew point ranged from 42 to 44 for the duration of this visit & mini-investigation, barometric pressure ranged from 29.77 raising to 29.82 and Relative Humidity Ranged from 57% rising to 61%. Lunar data was a Waning Gibbous Moon at approximately 98.1 percent Full. Solar X-Rays were normal and the Geomagnetic Field was unsettled. The MPR research team is still in progress of researching the history of this location. In brief, this was an access tunnel built by the railroad around 1910. We believe that it was originally called Lincoln's Tunnel by the railroad. Through an interview of a local resident near the tunnel, it was later called Lover's Tunnel due to the local teens using it as a place to gather on hot summer days and nights to cool off and also to be with their loved ones in a private setting. It was later called Satan's Tunnel due to another local resident later telling the local teens who went there stories about deaths and ghost associated with the tunnel. The railroad eventually removed their tracks from above the Tunnel and the property was bought by a local resident and is "Private" property today. The public county road "Tunnel Road" ends about 50 feet before the tunnel entrance and everything beyond that point is private property and access now. Urban legends revolving around this location include a person who was hit by a train above the tunnel and tossed to his death to the ground below, a person who hung themselves in the tunnel and finally the discovery of a homeless person who was living in the tunnel and later found dead with a frozen look of fright upon his face. It is also rumored that a group of Satan Worshippers and/or "Shake Rag" people once owned or occupied the land around the Tunnel and that dark rituals were performed in this area. There are also scattered stories concerning an old abandoned school house "Happy Hill School" which is located on private property in the wooded area beyond the tunnel. MPR is currently researching these stories to see if there are any truths to any of them. MPR would like to thank the local resident who took their valuable time to be interviewed by us concerning this location. If anyone has more information on this specific location then please contact us here at MPR. Missouri Paranormal Research would also like to take this to remind others that individuals and groups should NEVER trespass on any property to conduct any investigation. Trespassing is illegal and can pose dangers to people in your group and to others as well. The areas concerned in this investigation is now private property. County Law enforcement agencies do patrol this area frequently and the nearby private citizens monitor this area for trespassers. Violators will be reported and prosecuted by the proper legal authorities. Brought by Greg of MPR; Cell Sensor EMF Detection Meter, La Crosse IR-101 Infra-Scan IR Thermometer, Panasonic RR-US360 IC Recorder, Sony DSC-F828 8.0 Mega pixel Digital Still Camera (Cybershot), and an Engineer Directional Compass (Standard Magnetic Type) Brought by Tom of MPR; Pentax Digital SLR IST D Camera. Team members arrived at this location at 11 a.m. and spent time inside and around the tunnel. They then toured the property beyond the tunnel including the old "Happy Hills School House" and interviewed a long time local resident of the area. Two digital cameras were used to obtain photographs and one digital audio recorder was used to capture audio in EVP attempts and also for note taking and interviews. 1. Not much was experienced in this area except for a few unexplainable thumping noises while in the tunnel and also at one point some rocks fell from the area above the tunnel to the ground below. There was a feeling of heaviness experienced by both investigators at some points of the visit. Several digital pictures and approximately 1 to 2 hours of audio were collected during the investigation. All collected pictures and audio are in need of further analysis to determine potential evidence. Although some notable pictures and audio were captured at this location, it was far below the level of evidence needed to substantiate an actual haunting at this location. Follow up investigations to collect further potential evidence would have to be conducted to even begin to validate any haunting at this location. This location also has a higher probability of producing false positive evidence with the open wooded area, acoustics within the tunnel and other factors involved. It has also been determined that many of the urban legend stories were actually started by a neighbor who once lived close to the tunnel years ago. This neighbor would in fact make up such stories and tell them to the children and teens at that time in hope that the stories would scare them and keep them from coming back.
